Thirteen years ago this evening I was preparing to get some sleep. Neil and myself with the help of Janey had spent three months turning a ramshackle industrial unit in to a new gym for Ayrshire. Between Neil and myself we had spent our life savings to invest in CrossFit.
What has to be understood is in 2008 there were less than 500 CrossFits worldwide. It was an unknown quantity but we both had the awareness to know it would work. The proof as they say is in the pudding.
Fast forward thirteen years.
We are both sitting waiting, watching the lunchtime daily virus updates to be given a hint when we will reopen. The gym is sitting empty, all the equipment is out in our members homes and garages.
With the vaccination program that is currently underway we know we will be back and hopefully sooner rather than later. The support we have had from our members has been nothing short of amazing. For that we can only say a massive thank you.
So tomorrow we will celebrate the thirteenth birthday of CrossFit Scotland @ BasixGym. We will think of all the wonderful friends we have made, from all around the globe and we will also stop to remember those we have lost to the great gym on the sky.
We will be back, we will be stronger. Never again should anyone think that they have to train today. Instead, just be thankful that you get to train, embrace each wod.
For the moment, we can only dream of the time, when, in the words of William Ernest Henley we can say :
“I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.”
