I asked our Ian if he would write me a testimonial about his experience as a CrossFitter.

Here are his reasons for choosing CrossFit in his own words :

Congratulations to Crossfit Scotland at Basix Gym.

(2008 - 2018).

Why do you go to Crossfit ? This is a question I’ve been asked more than once, so I thought I’d put a few lines together as a reply.

Many of us think at some time, usually the start of a new year that, “I really must start going to the gym”. But which gym? There are many choices nowadays with numerous fitness regimes to tempt you in.

My first choice was made in May 1988 when I went along to Richeys Fitness Club in Kilmarnock where I met a certain Mr Neil Foley. Neil wrote up a ‘programme card’ for me which I used for my next 20 visits, then a few changes were made as I improved. As a reward at the end of the workout we could use the sauna or steam room. I remember it well.

Time went on of course and with it changes in circumstances, interests etc., but let’s fast forward 20 years.

In early 2008 I met Neil again, yes, in a gym, and we talked about Crossfit and his plans for a new gym in Irvine. I’d heard of Crossfit but had no idea what is was. So I went on-line and looked into things in more detail. This looked ‘interesting’. I certainly wanted something more challenging than was currently using up my time.

So I turned up at the new Basix Gym on 12th May 2008 and almost 10 years later I’m still turning up 3 times a week and still enjoying it. Why?

Well quite simply, it gives me everything I’m looking for in a gym. This ‘Sport of Fitness’ gives you a high-intensity class-based workout with routines that change daily. You are taught correct and safe lifting techniques, and are encouraged to work hard and at the same time, enjoy your training.

Think also - Strength, Stamina, Speed and Suppleness. Neil, Ron and the team will help you improve your cardiovascular fitness level and your physical well-being whatever your age, shape or size.

To finish off, I would like to thank all my fellow crossfitters at Irvine for their encouragement and the friendliness shown to this septuagenarian over the past 10 years.

Here’s to the next 10 years. IanB
